JL Spotlight: Kateryna Maistrenko
Kateryna (Katya) Maistrenko grew up around rowing. Her mom and dad both represented their countries in the 1988 and 1972 Olympics, respectively. They built and operated a large rowing center in Ukraine while Katya grew up. It was only natural that she started rowing when she was just 9 years old. Throughout her rowing career, Katya has rowed on the Ukrainian National Team, as well as for an NCAA Division I school in Washington. She was in the US when the war broke out in Ukraine. She found comfort by continuing to train on the water while also fundraising to support the people of Ukraine.

In short, I was diagnosed one month after my 30th birthday, one year after retiring from the elite sport of Rowing and 3 weeks before running my first marathon," she said. "Without having the firsthand experience as an elite level of rower AND having been coached by both the late Igor Grinko and late Ted Allison Nash, I may not have had the will to beat the non-discriminatory disease."

Why Do We Row?
Rowing is such a beautiful and unique sport. There is so much power, grit, determination, and exertion within a boat, yet from the outside, it looks smooth and graceful. Early mornings, grueling workouts, hours on the erg, and a huge amount of practice time for a relatively short race. So what exactly is it that makes rowers want and even love to do these things? We asked the rowing community, "Why do YOU Row?" Here are some of the responses we received.
