Rowing In Color Podcast with Maurice Scott, Jr.: On Diversifying Rowing and Being a Kid from Philly Who Never Gave Up

Team JL ambassador Maurice Scott, Jr. was born and raised in Philadelphia and grew up seeing boats on the Schuykill River. As someone whose path led him to rowing, he has worked to give back to the sport by coaching at Philadelphia City Rowing and Row New York. Additionally, he brings visibility to people of color within the sport through his story, his performance as an athlete, as well as his role as a JL ambassador. 

The Rowing in Color podcast is hosted by Denise Aquino and Patricia Destine who are two women of color dedicated to promoting diversity within the sport of rowing. Both are former rowers turned coxswains turned coaches in the sport. Together they have almost 25 years of experience on the erg, at regattas, in the launch, or at the boathouse. No stranger to navigation or microphones, these former coxswains amplify what it’s like to navigate the topic of race within the white-dominated sport of rowing. Like most bodies of water, the tide is changing; there are more American rowers of color than there has ever been. You’ll hear from people who represented the U.S. in international races to folks who just started to row this year. Tune in to listen to a mix of interviews, special co-hosts, and tag-team shows from hosts, Denise and Patricia. Whether a rower or not, you’re not going to want to miss!

We hope that the conversation in this podcast with Maurice helps us all in the rowing world -- no matter your race -- to unify the rowing sport through diversity.

UC San Diego rowers reached out to ask for help promoting a GoFundMe campaign to help their assistant coach, Dameon Engblom, the assistant coach for the UCSD Men's Rowing team. He unfortunately just lost his family home, beloved pick-up truck, and the majority of his bikes and bike workshop in Oregon due to the devastating wildfires. Dameon has coached at many other successful programs including the University of Pennsylvania and Oregon State. Needless to say he is one of us and part of our rowing community.

On August 4th, 2020 a monstrous blast flattened the port of Beirut. There was a tremendous loss of life and destruction of property. The lives lost can never be replaced, but the community can work to rebuild and overcome. Collateral damage in this blast was the Lebanese Rowing Federation. Our rowing community stretches across the globe. Consider helping out our fellow rowers in need!
