STEM to Stern Partnership
The STEM to Stern program was started in Milwaukee, WI at the Milwaukee Rowing Club as a way to eliminate the barriers of participation and to increase representation on the team. The main barriers to rowing include transportation, swimming lessons and club fees. By creating ways to address these barriers, students are able to participate, regardless of where they are from.
Rowing is the focal point of the STEM to Stern program. Clubs are able to use rowing to build relationships among students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to interact or compete together. One of the many benefits of STEM to Stern is the diverse and competitive environment that is developed through this program. By adding more athletes from all around your city, your team will become more competitive and more diverse.
STEM education is another focal point of our program. Many of the students who participate are behind in school. By having a STEM component as part of the program, we set students up to think critically, problem solve and be successful on and off the water.
The STEM to Stern team has worked with clubs around the country to help them develop their own program. Our mission is to create twenty-five programs across the United States by 2021.

I am on the Board of Directors of the Sarasota Scullers Youth Rowing Program and we are now affiliated with the Stem to Stern progran here in Sarasota, Manatee & Charlotte counties on the west coast of Florida. Please tell me what information I should submitt to JL for your support, The Fall will be our first offering of the Stem to Stern program to our comunnities. We feel there is a large untapped student population who would be well served by our program. We also feel that having Stem to Stern students would help introduce the wonderful sport of rowing to a group of students who might not be able to avail themselves of our program without our support and with other great organizations like JL Racing. We also feel in our efforts to develop our concept of “the whole rower” that it would be beneficial to our new Stem to Stern rowers as well as our current rowers by opening our club up to diversity and inclusion to more realistically have our program resemble the world as it exists beyond our club doors.
We are excited and energized by our opportunity to participate in the Stem to Stern program. If there is anything that you might need from the Sarasota Scullers Rowing Program. We are also excited to celebrate the Sarasota Scullers 30th anniversary starting this fall and cannot think of a better way to help us celebrate our storied program than to add the Stem to Stern program to our family. Thank You very much, Ray Giannini
